In the DiGeBaSt project (Digitization Gefaellter BaumStämme), Fraunhofer IPM is working with partners to develop a markless method for identifying tree trunks for the individual tracing of tree trunks or trunk parts. The method uses the individual surface structures on sawed surfaces as fingerprints and thus manages without any marking on the wood. Camera images of cut surfaces are reduced to a simple bit sequence for identification; subsequent matching is performed by taking another image of the same area and the corresponding bit sequence. The ID data is processed in a cloud and made available. This enables a forgery-proof assignment to individual forest owners – despite mixing during the harvesting processes.
